Detroit Vision Screenings
Free eye care in Detroit impacts Hill family
This is not just an eye exam; my children will improve their academic performance.
Like many residents of Detroit, Lakisha Hill and her family were hit hard by the current economy. Unemployed and without health insurance, Lakisha cannot afford vision care for her children, who both displayed signs of vision problems. Lakisha was concerned that her teenage son Daune would continue to perform poorly in school. Her younger child, Arreoena, also needed a checkup before the start of school.
A friend told Lakisha about free vision services at the Prince Hall Grand Lodge. “I was not sure exactly what to expect, but the kids are going back to school so I was desperate,” said Lakisha. Upon arrival, her children received free vision screenings from Davis Vision’s Focus on America® national outreach program as well as lunch, giveaways, and vouchers to visit a local SVS Vision store for a free comprehensive eye examination and eyewear.
Focus on America® visited other Michigan communities that same week. “I have family in Flint and told them to bring their children out to this wonderful event,” said Lakisha. “This is not just an eye exam; both my children will be able to improve their academic performance as a result of these free services.”
